Creating your first cover letter template takes about 2 minutes. The Template Editor combines a free-form prompt area, a library of dynamic variables, and AI helpers \u2013 so you can either write the template by hand, generate one from scratch, or improve what you have.<\/p>\n

Open the editor<\/h2>\n

Go to account.upwex.io\/cover-letters<\/a> and click the green + New<\/strong> button next to the templates list. This opens a full-screen New Template<\/strong> editor with a sidebar on the left and a writing area on the right.<\/p>\n

Name your template<\/h2>\n

Top of the left sidebar \u2013 the Template Name<\/strong> field. Use something descriptive: “Short & Direct”, “Enterprise Pitch”, “React Specialist”. This name appears in the widget dropdown on Upwork proposal pages, so future-you (and your team) can pick the right one at a glance.<\/p>\n

Write the prompt<\/h2>\n

The big right-hand area is where the actual prompt lives. Type freely, and wrap any dynamic value in [square brackets]<\/code> \u2013 e.g. [Client Name]<\/code>, [Job Aspect]<\/code>, [Pain Point]<\/code>. AI replaces brackets with real values when it generates the cover letter on Upwork.<\/p>\n

Insert variables from the sidebar<\/h2>\n

The left sidebar groups all available variables into four categories. Click any chip to insert it at the cursor position \u2013 or just type the brackets manually if you remember the name.<\/p>\n

  • TEMPLATE DATA<\/strong> \u2013 your reusable values ([Portfolio]<\/code>, [Signature]<\/code>) that you set up once on the Cover Letters page.<\/li>\n
  • FREELANCER<\/strong> \u2013 pulled from your synced Upwork profile: [Freelancer Name]<\/code>, [Hourly Rate]<\/code>, [Skills]<\/code>, [Freelancer Country]<\/code>, [Freelancer City]<\/code>, [Freelancer Timezone]<\/code>.<\/li>\n
  • CLIENT<\/strong> \u2013 extracted from the job and the client’s profile: [Client Name]<\/code>, [Client Country]<\/code>, [Client City]<\/code>, [Client Greeting]<\/code>, [Client Pain Point]<\/code>.<\/li>\n
  • PROPOSAL<\/strong> \u2013 AI-generated for the specific job at submission time: [Opening Question]<\/code>, [Problem Mirror]<\/code>, [Proof Point]<\/code>, [Micro First Step]<\/code>, [Availability Match]<\/code>, [Budget Rate Fit]<\/code>, [Budget Ack]<\/code>, [Requirement Ack]<\/code>, [Timezone Overlap]<\/code>, [CTA]<\/code>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    You can also invent your own brackets \u2013 anything in []<\/code> that AI can infer from the job context (e.g. [My Qualifications]<\/code>, [Engaging Question]<\/code>). Bracketed text shows up highlighted in green inside the editor, so you can see at a glance which parts will be filled in dynamically.<\/p>\n

    AI Generate \/ AI Improve<\/h2>\n

    The button in the top toolbar adapts to your state:<\/p>\n

    • AI Generate<\/strong> \u2013 visible when the prompt area is empty. AI creates a starter template based on best practices, which you can then tweak.<\/li>\n
    • AI Improve<\/strong> \u2013 appears once you’ve typed something. AI rewrites your draft for clarity, tone and structure while keeping your variables intact.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      Test Template<\/h2>\n

      Bottom of the left sidebar \u2013 the \u25b6 Test Template<\/strong> button. It generates a preview cover letter using sample data so you can see exactly how the variables get filled in, without leaving the editor.<\/p>\n

      Save<\/h2>\n

      Click the green Create Template<\/strong> button at the top right. The template is now available in the dropdown on every Upwex Cover Letter widget on Upwork. Use Cancel<\/strong> if you want to discard the draft, or the \u2190<\/strong> arrow on the left to go back to the Cover Letters page.<\/p>\n

      Tips for good templates<\/h2>\n

      • Keep it under 150 words<\/strong> \u2013 clients don’t read long walls of text.<\/li>\n
      • Open with relevance<\/strong>, not “Dear Hiring Manager”.<\/li>\n
      • One clear CTA<\/strong> at the end \u2013 a question or a call to schedule a chat.<\/li>\n
      • Use 3\u20135 variables<\/strong> \u2013 more variables means more personalization.<\/li>\n
