Every cover letter template tracks its own performance. The Cover Letters page shows four stats columns per template \u2013 SENT<\/strong>, REPLIES<\/strong>, REPLY RATE<\/strong>, OFFERS<\/strong> \u2013 plus an aggregated total at the top of the page. This is what tells you which templates actually convert and which ones to retire.<\/p>\n

What each column means<\/h2>\n
    \n
  • SENT<\/strong> \u2013 proposals submitted using this template in the selected period. Counted when the Cover Letter widget generates a proposal and you submit it on Upwork. Auto Bid submissions are attributed to the template configured for auto-bidding.<\/li>\n
  • REPLIES<\/strong> \u2013 replies received from clients on those proposals. Synced from your Upwork inbox in the background \u2013 you don’t have to do anything for this number to update.<\/li>\n
  • REPLY RATE<\/strong> \u2013 REPLIES \u00f7 SENT, expressed as a percentage. Color-coded so you can spot winners and losers at a glance.<\/li>\n
  • OFFERS<\/strong> \u2013 replies that turned into hire offers (the client actually invited you to the job). Also synced from Upwork.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Reply Rate color coding<\/h2>\n

    The reply-rate cell uses four color tiers to make comparison instant:<\/p>\n

      \n
    • Green \u2013 \u2265 15%<\/strong>. Great. Among the top performers; keep using this template.<\/li>\n
    • Yellow-green \u2013 10\u201314.9%<\/strong>. Good. Above average; small tweaks can push it into the green tier.<\/li>\n
    • Yellow \u2013 5\u20139.9%<\/strong>. OK. Average \u2013 worth A\/B-testing or rewriting the opener.<\/li>\n
    • Red \u2013 < 5%<\/strong>. Needs work. Consider a full rewrite or retirement.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      A template with zero submissions in the selected period shows no color \u2013 it hasn’t generated enough data to judge yet.<\/p>\n

      Period filter<\/h2>\n

      The header above the templates list controls the time window for all stats:<\/p>\n

        \n
      • Current Week<\/strong> \u2013 Monday through today.<\/li>\n
      • Last Week<\/strong> \u2013 full previous week.<\/li>\n
      • Current Month<\/strong> \u2013 1st through today.<\/li>\n
      • Last Month<\/strong> \u2013 full previous calendar month.<\/li>\n
      • Custom range<\/strong> \u2013 pick a Start and End date.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        Switching periods re-queries the API \u2013 every column updates instantly. The total strip at the top of the page (Templates \/ Sent \/ Replies \/ Reply Rate \/ Avg) reflects the same window.<\/p>\n

        Filtering by team member<\/h2>\n

        If you’re on an Owner or Admin role with a team, the page also has a user picker. Pick a specific teammate to see only their stats \u2013 useful for figuring out who’s getting the most replies on which template, and where coaching is needed.<\/p>\n

        How REPLIES and OFFERS arrive<\/h2>\n

        SENT is logged the moment you submit a proposal through the widget \u2013 instant.<\/p>\n

        REPLIES and OFFERS are pulled from Upwork in the background. There can be a small lag between a client replying on Upwork and the number ticking up in Upwex. If you’ve just received a reply and don’t see it yet, give it a few minutes.<\/p>\n

        What’s a good reply rate?<\/h2>\n

        Industry benchmarks vary by category and budget level, but as a rough guide:<\/p>\n

          \n
        • 5\u20138%<\/strong> \u2013 average; most freelancers sit here.<\/li>\n
        • 8\u201315%<\/strong> \u2013 good; you’re standing out from the pack.<\/li>\n
        • 15\u201325%<\/strong> \u2013 excellent; tightly niched template + strong profile.<\/li>\n
        • > 25%<\/strong> \u2013 top tier; usually means very specific positioning and selective bidding.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

          Sample size matters<\/h2>\n

          Reply rate becomes meaningful after roughly 20 submissions<\/strong> with the same template. With fewer SENT, random variance dominates the percentage \u2013 don’t panic over “0% reply rate” after 3 proposals, that’s just noise.<\/p>\n

          Best practices for improving reply rate<\/h2>\n
            \n
          1. A\/B test variants.<\/strong> Duplicate a template, change one thing (opening line, CTA, length), and run each on ~20 jobs before comparing. Don’t change the original template mid-run \u2013 its stats become unreadable.<\/li>\n
          2. Niche down.<\/strong> Generic templates underperform focused ones. A “React only” template usually beats “General Web Dev” in its niche.<\/li>\n
          3. Lead with the client’s problem<\/strong>, not your CV. Use [Client Pain Point]<\/code> early, your experience later.<\/li>\n
          4. End with a question<\/strong>, not a statement. The [Opening Question]<\/code> and [CTA]<\/code> variables exist for this \u2013 use them.<\/li>\n
          5. Keep it short.<\/strong> 80\u2013130 words wins more replies than 200+ words on most jobs.<\/li>\n
          6. Rewrite, don’t tweak.<\/strong> Small edits rarely fix a 3% reply rate. If a template stays red after 30 submissions, replace it instead of patching.<\/li>\n
